Our 6 eco design principles
When we set out to design our products, we like to get off to a good start by thinking about the end, from the very beginning. We know what the end is going to be, because the end of one of our products is always the beginning of something new. The materials that make one product have been recycled from other things and once that product has reached its end its materials can be used for new products. So that is why we know what the end of a product is going to be right from the start. The end of the way, however, isn't the only important part of a product's journey. Has it trodden lightly all along that way? Did it take lots of energy to make and ship far distances? What happened to the bits that weren't used in production? Was it useful?
So the Blue Marmalade Way is to think about all this before the product exists and ensure that it treads lightly on its way to the end and on to the beginning of another product:
Zero landfill waste
No true waste created during production, all cast off material is re-used or recycled or ideally repurposed into new products like bi-clip
Designed and made in Britain
For a low carbon footprint we design for local production processes and work within our own local economy securing jobs, ensuring well being and thinning about the benefit to people and plant.
Energy saving
Designed with energy saving in mind through utilising the most low energy production processes, reducing product energy impact in use and promoting energy efficient light sources in our lighting range.
Space efficient packaging
Reducing product size for both shipping and retail makes both of these resource intensive but vital steps less wast full. This also minimised the about of packaged needed at all stages. For instance the packaging of our polyrap wastepaper bin doubles as a carry case so you wont need a shop bag to take it home. The cardboard packaging is also biodegradable as well as recyclable.
Eco printing
All inks on the packaging are water based, we have embraced an honest aesthetic from day one of black ink on recycled brown board. We only work in this one eco ink colour.
R&R materials
Recycled and recyclable materials to give respite to the planet. Both product and packaging have been mad from recycled and recyclable materials in a way that leave them clean and as single materials ready for recycling into the next product.
